How to Hang a Wall Clock Safely: Fixings & Secure Lock
Hanging a wall clock safely begins with two decisions: where it should sit and how it should be fixed. The wall material, the weight of the clock and the type of rear fixing all matter.
This guide explains how to choose the right fixing, how to mark the wall accurately and how CalleaDesign’s Secure Lock system adds an extra level of retention on compatible models.
Nail, screw or wall plug?
The correct fixing depends mainly on the wall and on the weight of the clock.
Solid walls: masonry or wood
On a solid wall, a nail can be sufficient for a light clock, but a screw is generally the more secure solution, especially for larger or heavier models. Make sure the fixing is suitable for the wall material and comfortably rated for the weight of the clock.
Hollow walls and plasterboard
For plasterboard or other hollow walls, use a fixing designed for that type of construction, normally a suitable wall plug or anchor together with a screw. The fixing should be chosen according to both the wall structure and the weight of the clock.
Always follow the specific installation instructions supplied with the clock, as fixing details can vary between models.
How to hang a wall clock step by step
- Choose the position. Decide where the clock should sit and check that the time can be read comfortably from the main areas of the room.
- Prepare the tools. Depending on the wall, you may need a pencil, masking tape, level, hammer and nail, or a drill, screw and appropriate wall plug.
- Check the rear fixing point. Identify the slot, hole or hanger on the back of the clock. Measure the distance between this fixing point and the upper edge of the clock. Call this measurement X.
- Test the position on the wall. Hold the clock in the chosen position and place a small piece of masking tape on the wall directly above its top edge.
- Mark the fixing point. Remove the clock and measure vertically down from the lower edge of the tape by distance X. Mark this point with a pencil.
- Install the fixing. Fit the nail or drill the hole for the wall plug and screw, depending on the wall type. Make sure the fixing is stable before hanging the clock.
- Set the time correctly. Use the adjustment wheel or control on the back of the movement rather than forcing the hands from the front.
- Insert the battery. Check polarity and make sure the battery is fully seated in its holder.
- Hang the clock. Lower it carefully onto the fixing and check that it has engaged securely.
- Check the alignment. Use a level or stand back and make a visual check. On asymmetrical clocks, use the construction of the object rather than the outer silhouette as your reference.
Why a wall clock can fall even when the screw is secure
A conventional rear slot or hanger can hold a clock perfectly well under normal conditions. The risk appears when the clock receives an accidental impact from below or is lifted upward unintentionally.
In these situations, the body of the clock can move upward enough to disengage from a simple fixing point. This was the practical problem that led CalleaDesign to develop Secure Lock.
What is CalleaDesign Secure Lock?
Secure Lock is a rear mounting solution developed to make accidental disengagement more difficult on compatible CalleaDesign wall clocks.
Instead of simply hanging the clock vertically onto the screw, the fixing follows a guided path. Once engaged, the screw sits inside a shaped slot, helping the clock remain retained even if the front of the clock receives an upward impact.
How Secure Lock works
- Set the screw depth. Follow the instructions supplied with the product so that the screw head projects from the wall by the specified amount. The required spacing reference is supplied with the accessories where applicable.
- Engage the clock at an angle. Present the clock obliquely so that the screw enters the Secure Lock slot. Slide the clock first along the angled section and then horizontally into its working position.
- Centre the clock. Once the screw is correctly seated in the slot, move the clock horizontally until its centre of gravity is balanced and the clock sits naturally level.
With the system correctly engaged, an upward impact is less likely to lift the clock directly off its fixing. The clock can move laterally while the shaped slot continues to retain the screw.
How to remove a clock fitted with Secure Lock
Removal is simply the reverse of installation. Slide the clock away from its centred position, follow the slot back toward the release point and lift it away from the screw.
Do not pull the clock straight away from the wall or force it upward before the screw has reached the release section of the slot.
Is Secure Lock fitted to every CalleaDesign clock?
Secure Lock is already used on selected models and may be available on request for others. Because the mounting system can vary by product, check the individual product information or contact CalleaDesign if you want to confirm whether a specific model uses Secure Lock.
Installation and visual balance belong together
A secure fixing is only part of a successful installation. Height, scale and the relationship with furniture also determine whether the clock feels properly placed in the room.

Is a nail enough for a wall clock?
